What Is Spyware?
Spyware is defined as 'Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes.'
Spyware is typically installed onto your system through various bundled software packages such as freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded over the internet. The most common of these bundled packages are Peer-To-Peer software such as Kazaa. There are also websites which can install spyware by simply browsing their website. They do this by taking advantage of vulnerabilites within the Internet Explorer web browser such as executing an Active-X control through a web page to gain access to install spyware on your system.
Spyware is typically created to monitor your internet usage, gather information that you type, or force ads upon your desktop either by popups or by 'hijacking' your web browser to point to various websites. Advertisement related spyware is often referred to as adware. |
