Types Of Spyware
Adware:
Perhaps the most common types of spyware, adware is any type of software which displays advertisements such as banners or popups on your desktop based on your web browsing patterns.
Keyloggers:
A surveillance type software which monitors and stores your keystrokes (anything that you type), saves them (usually to a log file), then sends them to a receiver.
Toolbars:
A group of buttons which attach to your web browser (normally in a horizontal bar) allowing for quick navigation. These toolbars may trick you into clicking on something or searching for something that you did not intend to search for. Not all toolbars are intrusive - for example both Yahoo and Google each make a web browser toolbar with various helpful features and for easy navigation within their sites.
Browser Hijackers:
Browser hijackers modify your system to force your web browser to go to various web pages either at random or upon selecting your 'home page'.
Trojans:
A program in which malicious or harmful code is contained inside apparently harmless programming or data in such a way that it can get control and do its chosen form of damage. Trojans are especially difficult to locat and remove because of their stealthly-like nature.
Cookies:
Technically cookies are considered spyware, because they track and store user data without user knowledge. However the vast majority or cookies are harmless. Infact they are helpful in that they are typically used to store various information so that when you re-visit a website, it can 'remember' various information about your previous visit. Such as your username, email address, location, specific settings/preferences etc...
